Using the Web Shell

Enable, use, and disable the opt-in root Shell in the FreeCORE web interface.

FreeCORE provides a browser terminal under Shell in the navigation menu. It opens a root command prompt on the FreeCORE host, so it is disabled by default.

The setting controls only this root Shell. The Jails > Shell console, VM serial console, and System Processes continue to work while it is off.

Enable the Shell

  1. Open Shell.
  2. Click Enable Shell.
  3. Read the security warning and click Enable only if browser-based root access is appropriate for this system.

Anyone able to sign in to the administrative web interface can reach the root Shell after it is enabled. Keep the web interface restricted to trusted networks and accounts. Terminal session openings and closings are written to the authentication log; this is not a transcript of commands typed inside the session.

Each terminal connection uses a short-lived, single-use ticket associated with the signed-in browser session. An idle terminal is closed after one hour.

Disable the Shell

Use SSH or the local console shell to run:

midclt call system.webterminal.update '{"enabled": false}'

Disabling the root Shell does not disable jail consoles, VM serial consoles, or System Processes.
