Deprecated Features
Notes about CORE features that are deprecated and either receive no further updates or are scheduled for removal from FreeCORE.
As part of security hardening and improving feature maintainability, there are occasions when FreeCORE features must be deprecated. Features noted in this article are either no longer receiving any maintenance or, typically due to security vulnerabilities, might be scheduled for removal from FreeCORE in a future major version.
Begin planning migrations from these features immediately and note the FreeCORE upgrade paths required when a deprecated feature is in use.
S3 Service
The S3 service was deprecated in TrueNAS CORE 13.0 for security and maintainability reasons, and remains deprecated in FreeCORE. The web interface generates an alert when the service is either actively running or is enabled to start on boot.
Users should plan to move any production data away from the S3 service storage location. The MinIO plugin is one alternative.
SAS Multipath
SAS Multipath is supported as-is and receives no further maintenance updates. While multipath situations might be detected and be generally functional in FreeCORE, there is a possibility this is not available in a future FreeCORE major version. Users should avoid creating and managing SAS multipath scenarios with FreeCORE.
Virtualization
Jails, plugins, and bhyve virtual machines are not deprecated in FreeCORE. They are maintained features; see Virtualization.
Web Shell
The web UI Shell is removed in CORE 13.3. Users can continue to access the shell using SSH or a physical system connection with serial cable or other direct method.
AFP
The AFP protocol was deprecated upstream and remains deprecated in FreeCORE. Apple has deprecated AFP in macOS as well. Use SMB for macOS clients, including Time Machine backups. AFP support is scheduled for removal in a future FreeCORE release.
