Deprecated and Removed Features

Compatibility notes for deprecated features and features removed from FreeCORE.

FreeCORE keeps the CORE storage and virtualization model, but it does not keep every inherited service indefinitely. Review this page before upgrading when one of these features is in use.

Built-in S3 Service

The built-in S3 service deprecated in TrueNAS CORE 13.0 is removed from FreeCORE. Its service row, configuration screen, and supported middleware interface are not available.

FreeCORE 15.0 also removes the unsupported host MinIO server package and the archived minio-client administrative command. The package change does not intentionally clean up MinIO object datasets, but it does not migrate the deployment or guarantee preservation of package-owned files. A manually enabled host MinIO instance no longer starts after upgrading. Back up and prepare those installations before applying FreeCORE; see MinIO Compatibility.

S3-compatible Cloud Sync remains available. It uses rclone and is independent of the removed host service.

SAS Multipath

SAS multipath is supported as-is and receives no further maintenance updates. Although existing configurations might continue to function, avoid creating new SAS multipath deployments with FreeCORE.

Virtualization

FreeCORE 15.0 maintains iocage jails, plugins and bhyve virtual machines. FreeCORE 15.1 adds Applications and Bastille and retires the iocage plugin store. Existing plugin jails remain available through Jails; they are not converted automatically. See Plugins, Jails and Applications.

15.1 supports UEFI VMs only. Retained GRUB and UEFI-CSM definitions cannot run or be edited. Prepare and test the guest's UEFI conversion on 15.0 before upgrading; see VM Firmware in FreeCORE 15.1.

Web Shell

TrueNAS CORE 13.3 removed its web UI Shell. FreeCORE 15.0 adds a redesigned root web Shell that is disabled by default and must be enabled explicitly. Jail consoles, VM serial consoles, and System Processes remain available regardless of that setting.

AFP

AFP remains available for existing deployments but is deprecated. Use SMB for new macOS clients, including Time Machine backups.
