FreeCORE 15.1-RC7
A guided move to TrueNAS SCALE, container labels for Applications, a Swedish web interface, Samba 4.24.7 and the SMB Microsoft Account fixes, in the seventh 15.1 release candidate.
FreeCORE 15.1-RC7 is the seventh release candidate on the 15.1 line. It adds a guided Move to TrueNAS SCALE under System > Update, user-defined container labels for Applications and a Swedish translation of the web interface, and updates Samba to 4.24.7. It includes everything in 15.1-RC6.
Release date: 4 October 2026
RC7 is for evaluation, not production. Test it on a system you can restore or reinstall. The published CORE compatibility results do not establish that every catalog application or migrated workload works correctly.
System
- System > Update offers Move to TrueNAS SCALE, a guided move. It checks the system first, names any pool that TrueNAS SCALE could not import read-write, then fetches the TrueNAS SCALE 24.04 update from iXsystems' update server and installs it in place. The FreeCORE boot environment stays in the boot menu.
- The installer creates the boot pool with 4 KiB sectors (ashift 12), as TrueNAS SCALE does. A boot device with larger logical sectors keeps its own.
- The return point captured by an in-place move from TrueNAS CORE names the boot environment the system came from even when the system clock was wrong at installation.
Applications
- User-defined container labels. Labels can be set when an application is
installed or edited, catalog entries can declare their own, and Export
for Linux carries them into the Compose bundle. Names beginning with
io.freecore.are reserved. - Export for Linux no longer stops on an application with annotations, such as the catalog's Jellyfin.
- A refused catalog install names the field and the reason instead of returning an internal error.
Sharing and directory services
- SMB: the share list can be browsed again while any user is marked as a Microsoft Account.
- SMB: changing a user's Microsoft Account setting takes effect without restarting SMB.
- Active Directory: leaving a domain uses the system's Kerberos credential cache, as TrueNAS SCALE does, and removes the computer account from the domain.
Jails and virtual machines
- A DHCP VNET jail gets its address when a virtual machine on the same interface started first.
Configuration
- Save Configuration for TrueNAS SCALE carries the OpenVPN settings exactly as TrueNAS CORE 13.3 stored them, and the README files it and Export for Linux write describe the way back that exists.
Web interface
- The web interface offers a Swedish translation.
Base system and packages
- A process with many shared libraries no longer risks corrupting its own memory the first time it starts another program: the runtime linker takes upstream FreeBSD's fix for this (PR 295991) in place of FreeCORE's larger spawn stack.
- syslog-ng polls with kqueue again, as on TrueNAS CORE 13.3, and kernel
messages reach
/var/log/messages. - The iXsystems NVDIMM driver (
ixnvdimm) and the M-series NVDIMM alerts that used it are removed. FreeBSD'snvdimm(4)driver stays. - Security and maintenance updates to bundled software: Samba 4.24.7, Apache 2.4.69, OpenLDAP 2.6.15, the root certificate bundle (NSS 3.130), jq 1.8.2, Beautiful Soup 4.15.0, and Podman 5.8.6 with ocijail 0.6.1, conmon 2.2.1, Buildah 1.43.2 and Skopeo 1.22.2.
